Moronero is a village located in the Ezousas valley, two kilometers north of Episkopi. Moronero derives from moron neron, meaning “baby water.” The alternative Turkish name was Küçük Su, also literally meaning “small water.”

Historical Population:

As may be seen from the chart above, in the Ottoman census of 1831, Muslims (Turkish Cypriots) constituted the sole inhabitants of Moronero. During the British period, there were also Greek Cypriots living in the village, but by 1946 there were no longer any Greek Cypriots lin the villager.

Displacement:

In 1958, due to rising intercommunal tensions in the area where the village was situated, all the Turkish Cypriot families (40 persons) evacuated the village and sought refuge in Paphos(329) (Ktima). After their departure, their houses were destroyed by some radical elements. They did not go back to the village, but stayed in Paphos(329) until 30 August 1975, when they were all escorted by UNFICYP to the northern part of the divide.

Current Inhabitants:

After the departure of the Turkish Cypriots, no one settled in the village. The entire village is now in ruins.
