Trikomo is a small town of the east Mesaoria plain, located approximately two kilometers from e Famagusta bay and four kilometers northwest of Sygkrasi/Sınırüstü village. Trikomo means “three houses” in Greek. In 1975, Turkish Cypriots renamed it Yeni İskele to reflect the origins of the town’s current inhabitants. Most are displaced Turkish Cypriots from Scala, a coastal town of Larnaca(361), known in Turkish as İskele. Yeni means “new,” hence Yeni İskele literally means “New Scala/İskele.”

Historical Population:

As can be seen from the chart above, Trikomo was a mixed village with a Greek Cypriot majority. In the Ottoman census of 1831, Muslims constituted approximately 18.4% of the population. However, by 1891 this percentage dropped significantly to 3.4%. During the first half of the 20th century the population of the village increased steadily, from 1,247 in 1901 to 2,195 in 1960.

Displacement:

Most of the Greek Cypriots of Trikomo were displaced in August 1974, although some stayed in the town after the Turkish army took control. In October 1975 there were 92 Greek Cypriots still remaining in the town, but they were transferred to the south side of the Green Line in 1978. Currently, like the rest of the displaced Greek Cypriots, the Greek Cypriots of Trikomo are scattered throughout the island’s south, with small pockets in towns. The number of Trikomo Greek Cypriots who were displaced in 1974-78 was approximately 2,330 (2,323 in 1960 census).

Current Inhabitants:

Today the village is mainly inhabited by displaced Turkish Cypriots from the island’s south, especially from the Larnaca district and the city of Larnaca(361). Some families from Turkey, mainly from Adana province, also settled in the town in 1976-77. Over the last ten years, many European citizens, Turkish nationals and wealthy Turkish Cypriots from elsewhere in the island’s north (including returnees from abroad) have also bought property, built houses, and settled in the vicinity of the town. The 2006 Turkish Cypriot census puts Trikomo/İskele’s population at 3,657.
