Mousoulita is a village located in the Famagusta district, situated four kilometers southeast of Marathovouno/Ulukışla village. It lies directly in the middle of the Mesaoria/Mesarya plain. The meaning of the name is obscure. Turkish Cypriots changed the name to Kurudere in 1975, meaning “dry stream.”

Historical Population:

As can be seen from the chart above, in the Ottoman census of 1831, Christians (Greek Cypriots) constituted the only inhabitants of the village. Throughout the British period, the village was solely inhabited by Greek Cypriots. During the latter period the village’s population steadily increased from 137 in 1901 to 255 in 1960.

Displacement:

All of the village’s inhabitants were displaced in 1974, as in August of that year they fled from the advancing Turkish army to the southern part of the island. Currently, like the rest of the displaced Greek Cypriots, the villagers of Mousoulita are scattered throughout the island’s south, with large pockets in towns. The number of the Mousoulita Greek Cypriots who were displaced in 1974 was around 250 (219 in the 1960 census).

Current Inhabitants:

Today the village is mainly inhabited by persons originally from Turkey who settled there in the late 1970s. Most of these originate from Adana province (Feke, Kozan and Sayımbeyli districts) in southern Turkey. The 2006 Turkish Cypriot census put the village’s population at 86.
