Kouklia is a village in the Famagusta district, situated five kilometers east of Lysi/Akdoğan and eighteen kilometers west of the city of Famagusta. Goodwin suggests that, although the origin of the name is uncertain, it can mean “sepulcher” and also “country house” in Greek. He claims that in Greek kivourka and kouvoklia mean “tombs” or “entombing places.”In 1958 Turkish Cypriots adopted an alternative Turkish name, Köprülü, which means “with a bridge.”

Historical Population:

As can be seen from the chart above, Kouklia was a mixed village until 1946. Muslims always constituted the majority. Since the last decade of the 19th century, the village’s population constantly fluctuated between 150 and 210.

Displacement:

Although the village was historically a mixed village, due to rising tension in intercommunal relations, the Greek Cypriots left the village in the late 1950s. There was no displacement in 1963-4. Between 1964 and 1974, unlike many other Turkish Cypriot villages, Kouklia continued to stay under the control of the RoC government.

Current Inhabitants:

Currently the village is inhabited by its original Turkish Cypriot villagers. The 2006 Turkish Cypriot census puts the total population of the village at 215.
