Phrenaros, or Frenaros, is located in the eastern part of Cyprus, five miles southwest of Famagusta. It is located south of the Green line, in the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus. The origin of the name is obscure, but some claim that the name derives from the nearby ancient village of Frinaria.

Historical Population:

Throughout the British period the village was solely inhabited by Greek Cypriots, and the population of the village steadily increased from 313 in 1891 to 1,439 in 1960. The last recorded census of 2001 puts the population at 3,306.

Displacement:

From its original population no one was displaced; however, after 1974, the village served as a reception centre for many displaced Greek Cypriots, mainly from the Famagusta district. Housing for displaced Greek Cypriots was built here in 1976-78.

Current Inhabitants:

Today the village is mainly inhabited by its original inhabitants and many displaced Greek Cypriots from various villages in the Famagusta district.
