Avgorou, also known as Avgora, Avgoro or Avgoru, is situated eight miles southwest of the city of Famagusta and southeast of Athna village. It is also located near the villages of Frenaros, Sotira, Liopetri and Ormidia. Unlike many of the other Famagusta villages, Avgorou is situated in the southern part of the Green Line, in the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus. Goodwin believes the village’s name means “egg-shaped mountain” in Greek.

Historical Population:

As can be seen from the chart above, in the Ottoman census of 1831 the village had a mixed population. However, throughout the British period the village was solely inhabited by Greek Cypriots. The population of the village steadly increased from 452 in 1891 to 1,867 in 1960. The last recorded census of 2001 puts the population at 4,002.

Displacement:

From its original population no one was displaced; however, after 1974, the village served as a reception centre for displaced Greek Cypriots, mainly from the Famagusta district. In addition, the government of the Republic of Cyprus purchased some land from the village in 1977, which it developed into refugee housing.

Current Inhabitants:

Today the village is mainly inhabited by its original inhabitants, as well as many displaced Greek Cypriots from various villages in the Famagusta district.
