Agios Andronikos is a village in the Karpasia/Karpaz peninsula, located only three miles southwest of the small town of Yialousa/Yeni Erenköy. Greek Cypriots named the village after Saint Andronikos of Kanakaria. Andronikos also literally means “victor” in Greek. In 1959, Turkish Cypriots adopted an alternative Turkish name, Yeşilköy, meaning “green village.”

Historical Population:

As can be seen from the chart above, Agios Andronikos/Yeşilköy was always a mixed village with a Greek Cypriot majority. In the Ottoman census of 1831, Muslims constituted a slight majority at 53%, but their numbers declined in the first decades of the British occupation so that they constituted 46% of the village in 1891. During the first half of the twentieth century, both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot populations increased steadily. Nevertheless, the Greek Cypriots had a relatively higher growth rate, thus causing the Turkish Cypriot population percentage to decline further, to 30% in 1946. In 1960, when the Republic of Cyprus was founded, the Turkish Cypriot population recovered slightly and constituted 36% of the population. The reason for the recovery can be explained by the arrival of some of the displaced Turkish Cypriots of Melanarga/Adaçay (173) in 1958. On the other hand, there was a further decline in the Greek Cypriot population due to migration to the UK that took place during the emergency years of 1955-1959.

Displacement:

Although, there was serious damage done to the Turkish Cypriot sector of the village in 1964, Turkish Cypriots continued to stay in the village during the troubled years of the 1960s. On the other hand, all the Greek Cypriots of Agios Andronikos were displaced between 1974 and 1977. Initially only a small number of the village’s Greek Cypriot population fled during August 1974, and 560 of them remained in the village until October 1975. However, by July 1976, all but 28 villagers had left for the southern part of the divide. There were only ten Greek Cypriots living in Agios Andronikos/Yeşilköy by December 1980.

Current Inhabitants:

Apart from the original Agios Andronikos/Yeşilköy Turkish Cypriots, in 1976 many homeless Turkish Cypriots from nearby villages such as Platanissos/Balalan(185), Galinoporni/Kaleburnu (145), Koroveia/Kurova (158), Melanarga/Adaçay (173) and Galateia/Mehmetçik (144) were settled there. The village was also used for the settlement of some families from Turkey, mostly from the Muş, Kars, Osmaniye, Ordu and Adana provinces of Anatolia. The 2006 census puts the village’s population at 777.
