Lysi is a large village located in the Famagusta district of Cyprus, fifteen miles west of the coastal town of Famagusta/Gazi Mağusa and two miles west of Kontea/Türkmenköy, situated on the old Nicosia-Famagusta road. It lies directly in the middle of the Mesaoria/Mesarya plain. The meaning of the name is obscure. However some sources claim that the name Lysi derives from the Greek word lisi, meaning “melting.” In 1975 Turkish Cypriots changed the name to Akdoğan, meaning “white falcon”. This new name was a combination of the names of two villages from which the majority of displaced Turkish Cypriots settling in Lysi after 1974 derived: “Ak” from Akıncılar (Louroujina) and “doğan” from Aydoğan (Stavrokonnou).

Historical Population:

As can be seen from the chart above, in the Ottoman census of 1831, Christians (Greek Cypriots) constituted the only inhabitants of the village. Throughout the British period, the village was solely inhabited by Greek Cypriots. Its population steadly increased from 1,138 in 1901 to 3,737 in 1960. The population continued to grow in the 1960s, from 3,737 in 1960 to 4,537 in 1973.

Displacement:

All of the village’s inhabitants were displaced in 1974. Between July and August 1974 they fled from the advancing Turkish army to the southern part of the island. Currently, like the rest of the displaced Greek Cypriots, the Greek Cypriots of Lysi are scattered throughout the island’s south, with large pockets in towns. The number of the Lysi Greek Cypriots who were displaced in 1974 was around 4,600 (4,537 in the 1973 census).

Current Inhabitants:

Today the village is mainly inhabited by displaced Turkish Cypriots from the Stavrokkonou(338) village in the Paphos district and by villagers from the Louroujina/Akıncılar(063) enclave in the Nicosia district. The latter village is now located in a narrow strip of land extending south of the Green Line and accessible only by passage through a military encampment. Most of the villagers were removed from Louroujina/Akıncılar(063) in 1976 and relocated to Lysi/Akdoğan. The 2006 census puts the village’s population at 2,581.
